Gladys Chua and Chris Van Tuinen perform Messiaen

Perth pianists Gladys Chua and Chris van Tuinen tackle Olivier Messiaen's "Visions de l'Amen". Completed in 1943, this work is a large scale, 50min piece for two pianos, premiered the same year by Messiaen and his wife, pianist Yvonne Loriod.

This work is Inspired by a quote by French Roman Catholic writer Ernest Hello: "Amen, word of Genesis, which leads to Revelation; Amen, word of Revelation, which is the consummation of Genesis".

Messaien gives four interpretations of Amen: "It is done", "So be it according to thy will", "In the hope, the desire, that I may freely give and freely receive", and "It is so, world without end". Reconciling the composer's devout Catholicism with ecstatic visions of the cosmos and of nature, seven musical visions begin at the darkness and void of Creation, moving through living beings who say Amen in gratitude for their existence, ending in the blazing light of Consummation.

Rossini Petite messe solennelle

Little solemn mass

Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle is a musical curiosity, and written 30 years after his retirement from writing operas.  The sacred text of the Missa solemnis is set to music which is sometimes delicate, often witty, and frequently over-the-top … while poking fun at Rossini’s own (and other composers’) musical styles.  In this salon-style performance we present Rossini’s original and rarely heard version for two pianos, harmonium/piano accordion, and 11 singers.  (Spoiler alert: Sadly we can’t meet Rossini’s direction of 12 singers of three sexes: men, women and castrati).  If you love a melody and sparkling music, the Callaway Music Auditorium on Sunday 26 August at 3pm is the place you need to be.

Improvisation (Nicholas Bannan and James Ledger)

This week we delve into one of our 2nd year music units and explore the development of skills in improvisation. MUSC2525 is the last in a sequence of 4 'Music Language' units that develops core theoretical, musical and perceptual skills, involving two mutually supportive components - harmony and form; and aural?keyboard skills.

Lecturers James Ledger and Nicholas Bannan have devised assignments that involve students in creative responses. Material from these sessions will form the basis of pair and group improvisations, introduced and contextualised by James and Nicholas.
