The Cultural Precinct is seeking enthusiastic students to join the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery team as part of a structured learning placement. The placement will offer students learning opportunities in specialist areas over the semester period.

The Collections and Research placement involves utilising the Cruthers Collection of Women's Art (CCWA) library to produce a research database or document listing available sources of information on artists and collection themes, as well as assisting in cataloguing and categorising CCWA library resources.

The position will suit a student in the field of art history, archives, records or collections management.

Skills required

  • Sound knowledge of Australian art history
  • Outstanding attention to detail
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Demonstrated strength in research, analysis and interpretation

Duties involve

  • Cataloguing library resources, checking against database, adding new or unlisted resources
  • Cataloguing sources of information on specific collection artists and themes and the depth and relevant of those sources
  • Categorising library resources according to theme and content, developing a a function framework of categorisation in consultation with the CCWA curator
  • Reporting on deficits of library resources and areas in which collection research resources need to be developed

Learning outcomes

  • Developed research skills and knowledge of Australian art history
  • Demonstrable critical analysis, interpretation and classification of information
  • Developed knowledge and understanding of the Cruthers Collection of Womens' Art and of discourse related to women's art

Duration

Recommended - 100 hours per semester.
