The Language of the Mind

A writing masterclass with Michelle Johnston. Presented by UWA Publishing

Most writing advice recommends the use of generous sensual detail. But what is it about material infused with the senses that makes such text so immersive to read?

This workshop with debut novelist Michelle Johnston, author of Dustfall, dives into places you may not ordinarily go. You will travel deep into the human brain to understand why sensuous detail is so compelling.

Michelle will combine a peppering of neurobiology with philosophy and good old-fashioned writing craft to discover how to tap into the mystery of the private universe that is the human mind.

Crafting Magic Sentences

A writing masterclass with Michelle Johnston. Presented by UWA Publishing

What does it take to write the perfect sentence? How can one arrange words so artfully that they will take the reader’s breath away, or make them swoon, or compel them to put down your material and stare into the distance to recover? The answer? No one knows. But we can learn from masters past.

Novelist Michelle Johnston will examine techniques used by some of the great writers; you will explore the tactics of rhetoric, the music of syntax, and have some fun creating your own small wonders.
