Hans Arkeveld

Hans Arkeveld

Celebrated artist Hans Arkeveld has been a part of UWA and the Western Australian artistic community for more than 40 years.

Hans first became interested in anatomy in order to understand the workings of the human body and to be able to draw and sculpt them effectively. He was welcomed as an artist-in-residence at the School of Anatomy and Human Biology in 1968.

He went on to study anatomy, histology and/p embryology formally at UWA, and after decades working and studying in the School - and exhibiting his work in WA and across Australia - he was elected an Honorary Fellow in 2000.

Hans was also awarded the Chancellor’s Medal in 2000 in recognition of his work with UWA. In 2009 he was awarded the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from Artsource, WA’s leading visual arts body.

Two of his sculptures are on display in the grounds of UWA, one outside the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery and the other in the Memorial Garden outside the Anatomy building.
